How to Use Barmate with Single-Clamp Grips | MTB Handlebar Tool Storage Hack
Single-clamp grips are becoming a popular choice among MTB riders because of their comfort, clean and minimalist look. However, they come with one downside: they often block off the ends of your handlebars, making it difficult (or even impossible) to install tool storage systems like our Barmate. Many grips are pressed tight against the bar end, leaving no room to access the storage cavity. Because of this, most riders with single-clamp grips have skipped handlebar storage options — until now.
We’ve come up with a simple hack that lets you use the Barmate system with your single-clamp grips. Follow these steps, and you’ll have tool storage inside your handlebars in no time!
Step 1: Prepare Your Grips for Drilling
You’ll need to drill a hole in the center of the bar-end cover section of your grips. We recommend using a cordless drill.
Step 2: Drill and Smooth the Hole
Once the hole is drilled, use a file or grinder to remove any excess material. Your goal is a smooth, clean finish. The hole should match the internal diameter of your handlebar and be free of burrs.
Step 3: Test Fit the Barmate Tool
Check if the Barmate tool slides smoothly through the hole in your single-clamp grip. It should fit without any obstruction.
Step 4: Install and Align the Grip
Slide the grip onto the handlebar and align the hole in the grip with the edge of the handlebar. Once it’s properly positioned, tighten down the clamp securely.
Step 5: Install the Barmate System
Insert the Barmate into the handlebar through the newly drilled hole. Ensure it sits properly by adjusting the expending rubber.
Step 6: Go Ride!
You are all done, enjoy the ride!
